Telltale Games and Mojang announce 'Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Games Series'

Telltale Games and Mojang today announced that 'Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Games Series' is in development and is set to premiere in 2015.

Minecraft: Story Mode will be an all-new narrative-driven, episodic game series, developed by Telltale in collaboration with Mojang and members of the Minecraft community. Set in the world of Minecraft, the game series will introduce new characters and familiar themes, but will be an entirely original Minecraft experience inspired by the game that continues to inspire a generation.

"Partnering with Mojang is a dream come true for us as game makers and as storytellers," said Kevin Bruner, President and Co-Founder of Telltale Games. "Minecraft is a world of infinite possibility and imagination. Working with the Mojang team on our own unique, story-driven interpretation of their fascinating universe is a tremendous honor. We simply cannot wait for fans across the world to take off with us on this new adventure."

Minecraft: Story Mode will be a standalone product, separate from the core Minecraft game, and will be available to download in 2015 on Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android-based devices.

"People really like the idea of stories about Minecraft, but forcing a narrative into our core game experience would restrict players' freedom to view the world in their own unique ways. Instead, letting them explore an alternate interpretation via Minecraft: Story Mode, driven by the proven might of Telltale, seems like a no-brainer," said Owen Hill, Chief Word Officer at Mojang. "We're big fans of Telltale Games at Mojang, and we can't wait to reveal more details on Story Mode soon."

Telltale Games reveals first trailer for Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

Based on the award-winning HBO television drama series, Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series tells the story of House Forrester. Caught up in the events of The War of the Five Kings, they are placed in a precarious position where members of the household must do everything they can to prevent the house from meeting its doom.

Some cast members of the series will reprise their roles in the game. While players will control five members of House Forrester in their story, the series will have them interacting with fan favorite characters throughout the season, including Tyrion Lannister performed by Peter Dinklage, Cersei Lannister performed by Lena Heady, Margaery Tyrell performed by Natalie Dormer, and Ramsay Snow performed by Iwan Rheon. Additional cast members will appear in later episodes.

The game series is based on the world, characters and events seen in HBO's TV show, which in turn is based on George R. R. Martin's books (A Song of Ice and Fire). The events in the game series begin towards the end of Season Three of the series, and end right before the beginning of Season Five. Players will visit familiar locations such as King's Landing and The Wall, as well as unfamiliar locations such as Ironrath, the home of House Forrester.

House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North - the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering ironwood trees. Built over fifteen hundred years ago by Cedric Forrester and his triplet sons, Ironrath is a testament to the strength and endurance of Ironwood. The Forrester house words are 'Iron from Ice', which echoes their belief that - like the ironwood itself - the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger.

The game will be played from five different points of view. Each is a member of House Forrester; either a direct family member, or a person in service to the House. Scattered across Westeros and Essos, each will play their part in seeking to save House Forrester from destruction.

Playing as five characters not only reflects the epic scope of Game of Thrones, but is also something that the player needs to be mindful of. This is because the actions of one character can ripple out to affect the rest of House Forrester. Multiply the actions of one character by five, and you're truly playing the Game of Thrones... where you win, or you die.

Additional details on the series and its upcoming premiere episode, 'Iron From Ice' are forthcoming. Stay tuned to the Telltale Games Blog, twitter, and Facebook pages for more information as the premiere approaches, the first of six episodes, which will be arriving for download soon on PC/Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and iOS, with additional platforms to be announced.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days Review

The first season of The Walking Dead series was a huge success, Telltale Games received numerous awards for their work and they were certainly deserved. Now in 2013 Telltale goes back to the land imagined by Robert Kirkman, this time though the expectations are high, so the question is, have they done it again? Or did they succumb under the pressure of success?

Story
This time around instead of following one or two fixed protagonists, Telltale opted for introducing five at once, while at first the only thing they seem to have in common is the fact that they are all screwed thanks to a certain zombie apocalypse, as time goes on, you will find that they have more in common than what appears at first glance.
400 Days serves as a stepping stone between the 1st and 2nd season of the series, introducing new characters that according to what I understood, will make an appearance in the future. It is an incredibly intelligent move on Telltale part if this is true, that means that in the 2nd season right from the start you will have an emotional connection to some of the survivors. Brilliant!

There is just one problem, the fact that 400 Days is such a short chapter and introduces so many characters at once, might make you care less for them, you never have the time to really get to know them and build up an emotional relationship with all the protagonists like you did with Lee or Clementine. It certainly seems like a missed opportunity.

Gameplay
400 Days remains true to the series, I would call it a point and click on rails. Avoiding any situation where the player might get stuck seems to be one of the goals set by the developers, it's a nice change of pace from other adventure games, it certainly puts a lot more focus on the story telling rather than the puzzles.
Telltale tries to introduce more action sequences this time around, it's a lot of fun trying to figure out if you should run for your life or do the right thing, these sequences could be a bit harder if only to add some more suspense and excitement, still they are really well structured.

Graphics and Sound
Once again this seems to be the area where Telltale struggles a bit more, not that the graphics or art style are bad, they still have the cartoony style that will look good forever, it's just that the lip syncing is terrible, it does not ruin the experience in any shape or form, but in a tight package such as The Walking Dead series has been, any kind of misstep seems like a big deal.
Thankfully the voice acting is still near perfect, making each character feel alive and unique.

Final Thoughts
Even if it's just a short preview for the 2nd season, 400 Days is well worth the download, Telltale Games showed that they still got it and that success in little has affected their ability to produce great games.
Robert Kirkman should be proud!
