Royal Revolt Quick Review

Royal Revolt starts with you, the Prince, going off to study magic in Bogsmartz. During your stay there something terrible happens and your father, aka the all mighty King, dies. Unfortunately you're not informed of this tragic event and so it is to your great surprise that your kingdom is in shambles and torn apart when you finally return. The cause for all this political madness? Your uncles and aunts eagerness to sit on the throne. It is up to you, the Prince, to put a stop to this insanity, luckily you've got some new magical skills, it seems a good time as any to put them to the test.

One of your lovely relatives
The title from developer Flare Games can be described as a mix between real time strategy (rts) and beat em up, with pinches here and there of other genres like the rpg and tower defense.
Playing as the aforementioned Prince, it is your royal duty to take back your kingdom, to achieve that goal you will have to command into the field of battle your loyal troops, quickly learning the ropes when it comes to troop management and timing your magical skill just right will be essential to put a stop to your power hungry relatives.
At your disposal there will be several different types of units (swordsman, archers, mages, catapults), using them in accordance with each situation is key to success, don't be fooled by the first few levels where you can just "zerg" your opponent with a huge number of infantry units, the game will require a bit of strategic thinking later on when traps and more types of spells are thrown at you.

Mission Select Overworld
While the game is totally free, you can spend some real money in it to help you upgrade your units and Prince a little bit faster, it's not really necessary to do that as the money and gems you collect during the 20+ mission campaign should be more than enough to see you through to the end. If needed you can always grind a bit more if you so desire, improving and upgrading your spells, hero and military units can make the last few missions go a bit smoother.

First few traps you encounter
While all the betrayal and vengeance that the game throws at you in the first few minutes might feel like something out of a George R.R. Martin book, the game itself is very cartoonish and comedy oriented. The 3D graphics look very cute and do their job in a competent fashion, all the different types of units are easy to distinguish and maybe even more importantly, checking their health bars is super simple, this way you may cast your healing spell just at the right moment to keep them alive for another day (or another minute).

Scenarios are pretty varied
All in all Royal Revolt is a very simple and cute looking real time strategy game, it could definitely offer a bit more in terms of longevity, but what we got right now is already very good, especially when you consider that it is a free game. If you have the hardware required to play it I certainly recommend that you check out this title from Flare Games.
