The other day I made a little reference on twitter about a Kickstarter project named Tangiers, it caught my attention due to the level of surrealism that at first glance it exhibited, disturbing character models with very distorted human similarities immediately caused a feeling of discomfort and uneasiness, the dark, claustrophobic, almost monotone scenarios certainly didn't help for that feeling to fade.
I want to highlight the passion and dedication that the developers have shown so far, even without much support or income, the development cycle was started, only introducing the game to Kickstarter when they actually had something to show and all the basic concepts were well defined.
This is one of the most important aspects when you put up a project on a platform like Kickstarter, have more than just some random concept art to show to the players who are contributing money to your cause, for example, if you go to Tangiers page right now you can already find some gameplay footage, concept art, fleshed out and down to earth ideas. Yes, all the game concepts and ideas are already very well defined which makes the possibility of a final release version a lot more likely to actually happen.
Alex and Michael certainly seem to have a grasp on reality (even though it does not look like it if you look at Tangiers), they understand the limitations and consequences of getting over-ambitious with their project, sticking to the plan is the best option, especially when projects of this nature are concerned.
Tangiers is (or will be) a game with heavy influences from the Thief series, exploration and stealth seem to be key to your survival as you are a very frail being, exploring a horrific new world.
Somewhere along the development phase though, someone went "cuckoo bananas" and started creating very weird and eerie characters, according to the devs the models and scenarios are inspired by artistic movements, writers and movie directors. Inspired or not, Tangiers will be the set to one of the most surreal gaming worlds that I remember ever seeing.
Right now, and according to what we see in the images and videos available, it seems much of Tangiers is going to take place in very tight and claustrophobic environments, making you feel oppressed by all the dark tones and constant presence of disfigured enemies. But then there are some pictures of huge and somewhat colorful landscapes, in these, the objective shifts from exploration and stealth to navigation, finding the unique landmarks to use as reference seems to be fundamental, getting lost in these huge fields probably does not bode well for your survival.
But there is so much more information already out there regarding the world created by Alex and Michael, for example the "Words Mechanic" that they have in place is intriguing and one can only hope for it to be implemented for the benefit of gameplay.
I really recommend you to go and check out their Kickstarter page for all the tiny little details that they are putting out every day, it is much more than I can possibly hope to cover in just one article.
