Zia's Corner, Ep.55 - FTL (Faster than Light), MilkyWay

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Out of all the tracks present in FTL, I would have to say that this one was probably the most impressive for me, while most of the music from FTL is simply amazing, Ben Prunty did a terrific job, this one just stuck in my head for some reason.
If you don't know it already, Faster than Light is a beautiful and very strategic spaceship simulator (kinda), you control the crew inside your ship and managing the amount of speed and time you dedicate to exploration is key to survive in this game, trust me when I say that the hardest modes are tough, really tough... oh and it has permadeath... sooo good luck with that.
If you want to get into the game right now you're still in time, the community that plays it is huge and a really expansive update (advanced edition) also came out, so be sure to check it out if it sounds like your cup of tea.

5 reasons you should play Full Bore, the 2D pig-digging puzzle-platformer

Full Bore is a 2D indie pig-digging puzzle-platformer developed by Whole Hog Games and published by Nkidu Games, they think you should play their game and have sent us the 5 prime reasons for that. Check them all out below:

In Full Bore, you choose from two playable characters, both boars. Be a pig and dig, dig, dig. Yeah, it also opens up all sorts of fun jokes about boring, boars, bores, etc.

Full Bore isn’t just a cute little puzzle-platformer-digging-sim. Underneath the pretty visuals and fun gameplay you’ll dive into a mysterious story with all sorts of interesting characters.

Full Bore is chock-full of challenging puzzles, and you’ll be pushing blocks around, digging through the earth, triggering laser beams and all sorts of fun stuff as you try to collect gems and whatnot.

Of course, if the puzzles were too hard, the game wouldn’t be all that much fun. However, if you do make a wrong move, use the handy rewind function to go back a few steps or all the way back to your last checkpoint. It’s a non-violent game, after all. We don’t need you dying on us, boar.

Throughout the adventure you’ll enjoy exploring a rather large, open world, and you’ll meet tons of interesting characters and see beautiful and eerie locations. The game encourages you to explore at your own pace.

Zia's Corner, Ep.54 - Spelunky HD, Mines B

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Ever dreamed of being Indiana Jones? Well, Spelunky might be the game you're looking for then, save damsels in distress and explore tons of exciting places while at the same time dodging dangerous traps.
Spelunky is a game that started out in 2009 as a freeware title and then made its way into several different platforms including the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 with an HD version, not bad for a small game that started out free of charge.
The track that we feature today is from the HD version of the game and is probably everyone's favorite, while extremely short, I think it transmits a sense of mystery and adventure that suits Spelunky perfectly.

Zia's Corner, Ep.53 - System Shock 2, Engineering

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

System Shock 2 has become over the years more and more a classic with a huge following, successors like Bioshock had maybe a bigger success when it comes to making money, still the second System Shock is still considered by many the best game in the "series".
While the game's graphics may be a bit outdated by today standards, it is still a decent looking game that "oozes" atmosphere and tension, the enemies in particular are extremely well designed, fitting nicely into the whole cyberpunk aesthetic.
System Shock 2 was designed by the infamous Ken Levine who also worked on Bioshock 1 and Infinite, he recently announced his intention to go back to smaller projects, what this means to the "Shock" franchise we still don't know, hopefully the studio that gets the chance to develop the next entry in this amazing series will be able to do a good job.

Game of the Month - February 2014 - Shadowrun: Dragonfall

While Dragonfall is actually a sort of expansion/DLC to the amazing Shadowrun Returns, the fact that it doubles the amount of gameplay hours that you can get out of Shadowrun makes it a perfectly valid contestant to Game of the Month.
Harebrained Schemes seems to have listened to the community and reviewers in general and fixed a few of the issues that the original campaign presented, gone is the quirky save feature that a few people had issues with, I personally found it refreshing, something that made decisions, good or bad, have a bigger impact on the overall gameplay experience.
Along with the aforementioned fixes came a ton of new features and content for you to enjoy, Seattle and the shady Barrens are gone, replaced by a splintered and conflict infested Berlin, the year is 2054 and the Dragonfall event is literally history, rumors and suspicions of a new threat arising begin to emerge though, along with your new team of Shadowrunners you will have to get to the bottom of this and hopefully fix the problem once and for all.

Like I had mentioned in my review of Shadowrun Returns, the soundtrack was one of my favorite elements of the original game, thankfully composer Sam Powell makes a return and delivers us yet another masterpiece.

Honorable Mentions:

Democracy 3: Social Engineering DLC
Democracry 3 is certainly not a game for everyone, heck, tons of people would even have a hard time considering it a true game. Still, and even without any amazing gameplay mechanics Democracy 3 is one of the most addicting games I've ever played. Running your own country and trying to convert it to your own crazy ideals is something that never gets old.
The Social Engineering DLC adds 26 new policies and 8 new dilemmas, with the introduction of this features, Positech Games has made it possible for you to influence your fellow countrymen or comrades in a more subtle way.
Unfortunately no new countries are added in this DLC, the option to "play" as a small or poor country would be great, thankfully the steam workshop almost fixes this issue.

Eschalon: Book III
Another game that's not for everyone, as the developer would put it, "Book III is not a dumbed-down RPG for the masses". Much like in the vein of Fallout 1/2, Book III is not an easy game, it requires patience, exploration and a few deaths in order for you to surpass your enemies.
If you're someone who finds himself returning to the past over and over in search of "new" and truly challenging RPG's then be sure to check out the Eschalon trilogy, you probably won't be disappointed.

Zia's Corner, Ep.52 - A Valley Without Wind, Title Theme

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

A Valley Without Wind is a true gem that unfortunately didn't got the attention it deserved back when it was released. While it's not a game for everyone - the steep learning curve and peculiar art style will make sure of that - it is a very rewarding experience for those that have the patience and will to master its controls and learn its deepest secrets. Exploration is key to conquer the world of Environ, stick with it and you will find a truly unique (randomly generated) non-linear world that will challenge you (and kill you) time and time again.
This was the first title from Arcen Games that I had the chance to play, it surprised me and makes me want to keep on playing, discovering bit by bit what other awesome "things" inhabit the strange world of Environ.
It goes without saying that I'm currently planning on playing the sequel, A Valley Without Wind 2. (fortunately Steam offers a decently priced package with both games)

Zia's Corner, Ep.51 - Guacamelee, Desierto Caliente

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Entry number 51 of our little musical corner is a weird one, it mixes and matches different types of cultures, gaming references, a nonsensical plot and probably one of my favorite soundtracks ever. Somehow at the end of the day, Guacamelee combines everything just perfectly and is able to deliver us an amazing experience that will certainly be remembered for many years to come. If you like a challenge and games that provide the means for you to explore a vast number of well designed levels and stages, then Guacamelee is probably something that you will want to play as soon as possible.
Aside from everything that I already mentioned, Guacamelee also has some of the most satisfying combat mechanics to ever grace a platformer, the amazing combos that you can pull off by using all sorts of wrestling moves will make you feel like a true "badass". In my opinion Guacamelee combat surpasses even the granddaddies of this specific genre known as Metroidvania, that is probably the biggest and best compliment that I can give to Guacamelee.
The (probably insane) minds behind Guacamelee are known as DrinkBox Studios, an independent Toronto-based video game developer that in the past has concocted other crazy ideas such as a Blob eating the whole world, now that's something that will never happen irl (probably).

Zia's Corner, Ep.50 - Broken Age, March in the Clouds

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Broken Age is a great example of how useful Kickstarter can be, a well-known developer like Double Fine used it in order to avoid any sort of restrictions or limitations imposed by publishers. This way they were able to make the game that they really wanted to. Once again the legendary Tim Schafer did an amazing job and brought us a super stylized and charming world.
The game is a traditional point and click adventure were you control two characters, Vella and Shay, that live in two completely different worlds, still they have something in common, routine.
Only Act 1 has been released so far, hopefully we won't have to wait long for the next installment to arrive.

Darkest Dungeon, Even Heroes Get Scared

With each passing year and a lot of Kickstarter projects finally coming to fruition, more and more attention and expectations are being cast upon these independent titles. After all, games like Shadowrun Returns, The Banner Saga or Broken Age can easily compete and even surpass titles that have the support of big publishers.
Darkest Dungeon is another one of those projects that has a ton of promise and that I personally want to see completed. If done correctly, this project from Red Hook Studios might quickly become one of the most original roguelike RPG's out there.

What is Darkest Dungeon?
According to the developers and all the pictures and videos available at their Kickstarter page, Darkest Dungeon is going to be a very dark and terrifying roguelike RPG. With each and every step that your brave heroes take, a bit of their courage is leeched, paranoia sets in, fear, irrationality and a few other not so manly feelings start to creep in, "What will happen when they reach their breaking point?".
This emotional baggage system can become incredibly fun (and terrifying) as it is something we haven't really seen in a roguelike before. No longer will you fight only flesh and blood foes but also the unimaginable darkness.

The combat in Darkest Dungeon will reveal the tactician in players brave enough to set out on this dangerous journey. Tough decisions will have to be made, the consequences of your poor choices will be permanent, severe and maybe even fatal.
Starting with the party composition and order you will have to choose which one of your fighters will take point, remember, monsters are not the only threat when you step into the darkness.

Decisions, decisions, even resting in Darkest Dungeon is an event saturated with decisions.
Using your "camping skill" will allow your party to set up camp and plan further advances into the dungeon. According to the devs there will be a few options available like scouting ahead, setting up a defensive perimeter or conserving provisions, all of these decisions will have positive and negative consequences of course.

Finally let's talk about the town in Darkest Dungeon, here is where your heroes will be able to recover from their dangerous missions and relax a bit. You will start off with only a few desolate buildings like a tavern and a church, as you progress through the game a few more structures can indeed be built, from them a few more commodities like extra classes and upgraded gear will appear.
After reading pretty much everything in Red Hook Studios Kickstarter page the Town is what concerns me the most, hopefully players won't be able to transform their party members into four gods of oblivion that wreak havoc upon once terrifying dungeons just by simply grinding a lot.

You can find out a lot more about Darkest Dungeon simply by taking a look at their Kickstarter page, their initial stretch goal was $75.000 (already achieved) which seemed reasonable, especially when you take into consideration that a lot of work has already been done. Hopefully the experienced Red Hook Studios team will be able to reach a higher stretch goal so that we get even more content when the game finally comes out in 2015 (predicted).

Zia's Corner, Ep.49 - Dear Esther, This Godforsaken Aerial

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

It's hard to describe and talk about Dear Esther as a simple game, it's more of an experience, an interactive book that will make you think and cause your mind to wander while you become one with the beautiful scenery and touching narrative.
Lending aid to the breath-taking visuals is a perfectly composed soundtrack that will sweep you off your feet and augment every moment that you spend immersed in the world of Dear Esther. Jessica Curry, the composer, showed all her skill and talent, this stunning experience would certainly not be the same without her incredible effort.
Dear Esther may be the ultimate proof that video-games can indeed become art, especially when developed by talented, passionate and dedicated developers like The Chinese Room.

Zia's Corner, Ep.48 - Gunpoint, Melancholia

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Gunpoint was probably one of the best indie titles of last year, with unique and interesting gameplay mechanics this is one experience that you do not want to miss.
This is a game where you can use your imagination to do what you think is best in each stage, kinda like what most triple A titles promise nowadays but in Gunpoint this different routes, paths and options are all actually viable.
Regarding the soundtrack I just love the warm and very stylized sounds, contributing greatly to the game's atmosphere. This track in particular is a bit on the short side but I personally love it.

Continuing with our epic quest to support indie game developers this time we bring you the soundtrack of a game that probably deserved a bit more attention, The Banner Saga.
This unique looking turn-based RPG was created by Stoic Studio, a recently founded game developer studio that while small, has a ton of experience. You can actually check out the "history" of their members right here: Link

Game of the Month - January 2014 - Blackguards

"What happens when the only hope of a threatened world lies not with heroes in shining armor, but in the hands of a band of misfits and criminals?" Well, the folks from Daedalic Entertainment tried to tackle that very question in their latest game, Blackguards.

If you're familiar with previous titles developed by Daedalic Entertainment you will know that they have a strong focus on point and click adventures, because of that, seeing a turn-based RPG like Blackguards coming out of their studio is a surprise to say the least. Still, and having played some of their games, I know the high level of quality that this German studio usually delivers when releasing a title, needless to say that my expectations for Blackguards were high.
Thankfully the folks from Daedalic Entertainment seem to have pulled it off and delivered us a very decent turn-based RPG. Not overly complicated or complex when it comes to the battle system, Blackguards has just enough depth to keep combat engaging without alienating newcomers or veterans.

As expected when you take into consideration the previous titles developed by Daedalic Entertainment, the storytelling is Blackguards strongest point. Like I mentioned in the intro of this article, the fact that you take control of "a band of misfits and criminals" makes their tale a lot more interesting to follow and easy to relate. Their conversations in-between missions are incredibly entertaining and fun to watch, through them you will get to know your "heroes" and their motivations bit by bit.
If you enjoy a good tactical RPG then Blackguards is definitely for you, while not a perfect game (it has a few flaws and bugs here and there) it still manages to be a great adventure that you will not want to miss.

Honorable Mentions:

The Banner Saga
This title would probably win the Game of the Month award if not for a few technical issues that undermined my personal experience with the game.
A beautifully crafted turn-based RPG that puts a lot of emphasis on your personal choices, every decision you make will affect the outcome of your journey.
This is a prime example of how successful Kickstarter projects can be.

Broken Age
Double Fine Productions outdid themselves with Broken Age, this is one of the most unique and beautiful adventures out there. Filled with personality and funny moments this peculiar tale will make you reminisce of a time when adventure games like this were a lot more popular.
This is yet another Kickstarter project that fortunately was successful.

Zia's Corner, Ep.45 - Max Payne 3, Tears

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

LYRICS
Love save us once
We'll fall from where we crawled
Love save us once
Beware what you want

Trust us now
It's time to let me go
Give up on us
Follow what you want
Trust us now
It's time to let me go
Give up
Give our soul away

Now you will go
Save us once
We'll never let go
Where we crawled
The memories are wrong
Save us once
We'll never wake up
What you thought you want

Trust us now
It's time to let me go
Give up for now
Follow what you want
Trust us now it's time to let me go
Give up
Give our soul away

Remember with love
It's time to let me never let go
Follow in your memories alone
It's time to let me never let go
We die alone

Zia's Corner, Ep.44 - Sonic Adventure, Open Your Heart

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Thunder, rain, and lightning
Danger, water rising
Clamor, sirens wailing
It's such a bad sign

Shadows of dark creatures
Steel clouds floating in the air
People run for shelter
What's gonna happen to us

All the steps we take; all the moves we make; all the pain at stake
I see the chaos for everyone; who are we; what can we do
You and I are same in the way that we have our own styles that we won't change
Yours is filled with evil and mine's not there is no way I can lose

Chorus

Can't hold on much longer; but I will never let go
I know it's a one way track; tell me now how long this will last
I'm not gonna think this way; nor will I count on others
Close my eyes and feel it burn; now I see what I've gotta do

Open your heart, it's gonna be all right

Ancient city blazing
Shadows keep attacking
Little children crying
Confusion, hopeless anger

I don't know what it can be but you drive me crazy
All your cunning tricks make me sick; you won't have it your own way

Repeat Chorus

Open your heart and you will see

Instrumental

If it won't stop, there will be no future for us
Its heart is tied down by all the hate; gotta set him free

I know it's a one way track; tell me now how long this will last
Close my eyes and feel it burn; now I see what I've gotta do

Gotta open your heart dude

Repeat Chorus

Open your heart, it's gonna be all right, yeah

Open your heart
Open your heart

Yeah

Who Needs Television? Episode #5 - Angry Joe Show

About "Who Needs Television?"
"Who Needs Television?" is going to be an episodic series where I share some of my favorite Youtube channels. It does not matter if they have loads of subscribers or just a couple, if I like their content they will eventually win their spot in some future episode.
Regarding the theme of the channels, I will try to keep them just related to gaming and technology in general, but you never know, I may mix up some wild cards here and there.
Enjoy!

Episode #5 - Angry Joe Show
The Angry Joe Show, much like the last channel I "reviewed" in episode 4 of Who Needs Television?, focuses a lot on entertainment, turning video game reviews into genuine fun as always been the thing that attracted me to the Angry Joe Show.
The amount of hours and work put into each video review is pretty noticeable (check the video below for proof) and it pays off, funny dialogue, quirky characters and a decent rate of reviews per year make the Angry Joe Show one of the best game reviewers out there. Not only that but you can also see how much love Angry Joe actually has for the gaming industry, even in the videos where he completely obliterates a game, he always leaves some sort of constructive feedback regarding what could have been done differently so that the final product might have been better.
Anyway, I hope you can spare just a few minutes to take a look at this channel, hopefully you will enjoy it!

Zia's Corner, Ep.43 - Sleeping Dogs, Sleepwalking

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Sleeping Dogs is one of the best sandbox games ever made, it embraces exactly what a sandbox game should be, fun! Unfortunately it flew under the radar for many gamers, let's hope that it did well enough to grant it a sequel.
Borrowing a few elements from games like Just Cause or Grand Theft Auto, Sleeping Dogs never loses its identity. The melee combat system for example is amazing and super satisfying, particularly the finishing moves. Driving sections are fast and super responsive, making even the usually boring random checkpoint races feel a treat to complete. The gun-play on the other hand is a bit lacking, fortunately weapons are not used as much in Sleeping Dogs as in other sandbox games.
If you don't know or haven't played Sleeping Dogs yet you should definitely check it out, especially if you enjoy sandbox games, it was released last year (2012) so you should find it pretty cheap.

Zia's Corner, Ep.42 - F.3.A.R., Mother

Simply sharing videogame music, just listen...and enjoy.

Mother
Tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words
What they mean
What they say
Mother

Mother
Can you keep them in the dark for life
Can you hide them from the waiting world
Oh mother

Father
Gonna take your daughter out tonight
Gonna show her my world
Oh father

Not about to see your light
But if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding

Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's

Mother
Tell your children not to hold my hand
Tell your children not to understand
Oh mother

Father
Do you want to bang heads with me
Do you want to feel everything
Oh father

Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding

Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's
Yeah

Not about to see your light
But if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding

Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Whoa
Mother
Yeah
